Owners Ashni “Baba” Kumar and Priya Guru of Guru’s Indian Cuisine have decided to open a limited engagement vegetarian pop up at Guru’s, located at 203 North Sycamore Street, in Newtown, PA.
The restaurant has been closed since January, which is when the couple decided to travel to India to concentrate on their three-year long odyssey to adopt two young sisters. The adoption process is still working its way through bureaucratic red tape, but Baba and Priya have now returned home to the U.S. to wait out the process, which they expect will take several more months.
In the meantime, they will restart limited operations as primarily a take-out vegetarian/vegan restaurant. The bar and 50-seat outdoor patio will be open to diners who order takeout, but the dining room will remain closed. The menu for the beloved restaurant will remain the same – minus all meat and fish dishes. “
“Spending time in India solidified my views on the ethical treatment of animals and why I cannot handle, serve or consume meat anymore,” explained Priya. “I am convinced there is no way to raise animals for food without causing them immense suffering. That’s why I decided to remove all meat from our menu and focus on vegetarian and vegan recipes exclusively.”
The humane treatment of animals is a subject that is near and dear to Priya’s heart. A portion of profits from all sales will go to Guru’s Guardian Angels, a nonprofit that the couple launched in September that is dedicated to rescuing and sheltering stray animals around the world.
Guru’s hours of operation will be noon to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and noon to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Established in 2015, Guru’s Indian Cuisine has been recognized for innovative interpretations of traditional Indian cuisine from diverse Indian states.
