class="wp-block-heading">As previously reported last week, Mamajuana Cafe on Frankford Avenue in Fishtown is now open. Close to the Brooklyn Bowl and the Fillmore, the 10,000-square-foot restaurant features seating for 350 inside. Known for its Latino cuisine, Mamajuana Cafe combines traditional recipes with new twists. Philly Grub correspondent Erin Flynn Jay took a look and sampled some dishes.
What I was most impressed with at Mamajuana Cafe were the sauces, all made from scratch, representing cuisine from around Latin American countries such as Dominican Republic and Colombia. The following dishes stood out:
CALAMARES FRITOS: Fried calamari with creole spicy sauce and chipotle mayo.
MOFONGUITOS: Crispy green plantain pressed with garlic and cilantro with chicken, pork, and shrimp.
EMPANADA TRIO: Shrimp, chicken and pork turnovers with corn, tomato, cilantro chimichurri.
PARGO RELLENO: A crispy whole Mediterranean red snapper filled with seafood, white rice, and creole sauce.
Mamajuana also has a full bar with many fun cocktails. I ordered a Cosmopolitan, and it complimented the food very well.
Mamajuana Cafe Philadelphia brings to life the authentic flavors of the Caribbean Hispanic and South American cultures but caters to the modern palate and with Instagrammable presentations. This is the 14th location to open, spanning across New York, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, and now Philadelphia. I highly recommend you check it out for a memorable meal and experience!
