What’s New at Rex at The Royal

Rex at The Royal, Philadelphia’s home for elevated Lowcountry fare housed in the historic and newly rejuvenated Royal Theater, and recently celebrated in Philadelphia Magazine’s list of 50 Best Restaurants and Best of Philly™, is thrilled to announce a spate of new menu items including Carolina Hot Dip, Snow Crab Salad, the Royal Seafood Plateau, and much more.

The expanded menu is now available during extended hours, which have grown to include Sunday night dinner (5–9 pm) in addition to standard dinner service Monday – Saturday. Additionally, Rex’s revered Burger, Shot + Beer Special is now available every Sunday and Monday evening for just $19.  

Under dramatic chandeliers in the sprawling 72-seat dining room, or bellied up to the glittering Amazonite-top 25-seat bar, Lowcountry-lovers can sip craft cocktails such as Rex’s signature Deep South ($12, rooibos tea infused vodka, lemons, salted honey) or indulge in a Royal Martini ($21, olive oil washed Spanish gin, Spanish dry vermouth,  herbs de provence, birchrun bleu cheese stuff olives), courtesy of Bar Manager Joshua Scheid, while feasting on the newest adaptations of traditional Southern cuisine orchestrated by Executive Chef Aaron Paik and the team of culinary experts at Rex at The Royal. Oysters ($19/half, $37/dozen) –- East coast oysters, house hot sauce, pickled cucumber mignonette 

Shrimp Cocktail ($18) — Poached shrimp, cocktail sauce, lemon 

Tuna Crudo ($19) — Leche de tigre, chow chow, benne seed 

Snow Crab Salad ($22) — Scallion buttermilk ranch, fennel, pickled corn, crackers 

Royal Seafood Plateau (For party of two: $69) — Half dozen oysters, tuna crudo, snow crab salad, shrimp cocktail, pickled cucumber mignonette. (For party of four: $149) — lobster tail, dozen oysters, tuna crudo, shrimp cocktail, snow crab salad, pickled cucumber mignonette 


Carolina Hot Dip ($18) – Country-fried hen of the woods mushroom, hot sauce, pickled red onion 

Smoked Brisket ($31) – 14 oz duroc bone-in pork chop, sweet and sour braised collard, peach butter, grain mustard sauce  

Crawfish Pot Pie ($23) — Three cheese spicy crawfish etouffee, crimini mushrooms, house made pie crust 

Frogmore Stew ($36) — Fish, mussels, crab, shrimp, andouille sausage, potatoes, corn, grilled sourdough 

Shrimp & Grits ($32) — Lowcountry heirloom grits, andouille sausage, crab, shellfish gravy 

Grilled Catch of the Day (Market Price) — Grilled local fish filet, red rice middlins, corn on the cob, herb butter 


Cornmeal Dusted Okra ($10) — Fried shishitos, espelette, spicy aioli 

Grilled Summer Squash ($12) — Zucchini, hot water cornbread, squash blossom pistou 

Crab Fondue ($21) — Three cheese fondue, crab meat, house-made Philly pretzel bites 

Fried Oysters ($12) — Sauce gribiche, fried capers 

Deviled Clam Toast ($10) — Chopped clams, four cheese, chili oil, sourdough 


Braised Collard Greens ($8) — Smoked turkey, sweet and sour 

Hoppin’ John ($9) — Black eyed peas, Carolina gold rice, okra, pickled carrots, onions, celery, peppers 

String Beans ($9) — Braised, tomato, Vidalia onion 

Mac & Cheese ($15) – pimento, cornbread crumble. Add lump crab +$12 

Along with the new and expanded menu comes extended hours to match: Due to popular demand, Rex at The Royal is now open for Sunday dinner service from 5–9pm. The Graduate Hospital locale has also sweetened the deal on its revered Burger, Shot + Beer special, a carry-over from Rex at The Royals’ former self, REX 1516.

The Burger, Shot + Beer special, available on Sunday and Monday nights, exclusively in the bar area, is comprised of Rex’s signature all beef burger topped with crispy red onions, spicy pimento cheese, butter, bibb lettuce, and smoked bacon served on a brioche bun served with a crisp Sojourner Lager (Sojourn Philly’s signature brew crafted in collaboration with Neshaminy Brewing) and a shot of well whiskey, is now available at the reduced priced of $19.
