Michael Kraemer, who achieved the Advanced Sommelier certification at the Wine School of Philadelphia, has been honored as the recipient of the 2023 Sommelier Student of the Year Award.

Since April 2019, Michael has worked on the front-of-house team at Alpen Rose, a Philadelphia steakhouse owned by The Schulson Collective. When the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the restaurant’s temporary closure, he found himself unemployed. Fortunately, the Schulson Collective assured its employees that they would not lose their positions and would not be denied unemployment benefits.

Michael decided to pursue a sommelier certification, recognizing this free time as an opportunity to enhance his skill set. He felt it would contribute to his professional development and align with his prospects upon returning to work.

Michael expressed his enthusiasm for the Wine School of Philadelphia, saying, “I consider myself fortunate to have one of the finest wine schools in the country right here in my local area! I eagerly took every available course they offered.”

Michael resumed his responsibilities at Alpen Rose, where he continues to work while advancing his sommelier studies. Next, he set his sights on obtaining the highest sommelier level, “Master in Wine,” in the upcoming year.

Michael also revealed that many of his front-of-house colleagues at Alpen Rose either hold a sommelier certification or are actively pursuing one.
