Product Corner: Heritage Kulfi Premium Ice Cream

I recently had the opportunity to try Heritage Kulfi, a new brand of premium ice cream based in Princeton, NJ. Already a fan of kulfi, which I usually order at Indian restaurants for dessert, I had to try this new product. Before I get into the details of the company, I just wanted to say how much I thoroughly enjoyed these products. Lucky for me, the owner was kind to drop some off to sample, generously offering one of each flavor!

As a year-round lover of ice cream, I was excited to try this new brand. I was particularly interested because of the unique flavors, some of of which I have never tried in ice cream before, such as cardamom chai, rosewater, and saffron!

If you’re a fan of ice cream and/or kulfi in Indian restaurants, I recommend trying Heritage Kulfi. Unlike mass produced American ice creams that are ultra sugary, these ice creams are not sickeningly sweet. The ingredient flavors shine through, the texture is creamy and smooth, and you can immediately tell the freshness – a result of a small-batch production process. I also appreciate that 1 pint = 16 oz. In some cases, when you buy a pint of other ice creams, it’s not a full 16 oz. At just $7.99/pint, it is a great value and less expensive than some other luxury ice cream brands. I’m an instant fan and happy to help spread the word.

Introducing Heritage Kulfi

Kulfi is a frozen dairy dessert popular throughout South Asia, which has been enjoyed across the region for hundreds of years. Today, Heritage Kulfi, a family-owned business based in Princeton, New Jersey, takes a modern spin on Kulfi, combining the freshest milk and cream from locally and regionally sourced farms with all-natural, non-GMO ingredients. There’s nothing quite like delicious food and treats for the holidays, and Heritage Kulfi is bringing the authentic flavors of South Asia straight to freezers across America, giving families a new, fresh dessert experience.

Heritage Kulfi has gained unprecedented popularity and expansion since its recent marketplace debut in 2022. The brand is now available in specialty and gourmet grocers, natural markets, and regionally focused outlets, including South Asian, Middle Eastern, and East Asian stores in the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York tri-state area and growing. For a full map of locations that carry Heritage Kulfi, visit heritagekulfi.com/connect.

Heritage Kulfi achieves a unique, creamy texture through a proprietary slow-cooking process, and with its South Asian inspired flavors, the brand embraces tradition while creating its own identity in today’s market. Heritage Kulfi’s flavors are built from scratch to be vegetarian, egg-free, gluten-free, and halal.

The distinct lineup of eight delicious, velvety, alluring, and intense flavors includes: Cardamom Chai, Earl Grey, Alphonso Mango, Saffron, Pistachio, Rosewater, Vanilla Beanand Coconut. Vegan and dairy-free flavors are currently under development. The product comes in 1-pint/16-ounce containers at an SRP of $7.99.

“The intent was to use high-quality, authentic ingredients when developing each flavor. Building on my own nostalgia for the South Asian food and desserts of my childhood allowed me to confidently create something that I know others would equally enjoy,” says Mansoor Ahmed, Founder and CEO of Heritage Kulfi. “I’m very excited to offer all ice cream enthusiasts something new and unique.”

Ahmed is a proud New Yorker, born in Manhattan to traditional Pakistani parents who immigrated from South Asia. Ahmed has years of experience in the dessert industry, having worked with other kulfi makers before successfully running another company serving the South Asian community in the greater New York area.

Years later, Ahmed and his wife Rebecca moved to Princeton, New Jersey, establishing roots with the local South Asian community while remaining active with the South Asian community across the river in New York. It was in Princeton that Ahmed discovered he was in the epicenter of a burgeoning ice cream destination.

For Ahmed and many people worldwide, 2019 and 2020 marked periods of radical change, and Ahmed found his interests and priorities shifting. Interactions with his local community spurred him into action, as he realized there was a demand for high-quality, locally made products that speak to the South Asian experience.

After a year of development, sampling, and establishing local partnerships, Heritage Kulfi launched its full flavor line in winter 2021. The company is currently securing additional distribution rights at select retailers throughout the tri-state area and beyond.
