Nestled in a little shopping center off of Bethlehem Pike and Germantown Avenue in Historic Chestnut Hill Philadelphia, Banjara Indian Bistro is a warm and inviting Indian BYO located at the top of the hill.
Warm tapestries and beading invites the diner inside without feeling too overdone or garish. The menu is comprehensive without being overwhelming. Offering a great selection of dishes one would expect to find as well as a few unique items on the monthly specials list.
Our meal started with the usual papadam & chutney brought to the table. We decided to try the Tandoori Wings from the specials menu and were absolutely delighted by the Desi spin on an American classic.
Ordering a selection of both vegetarian and meat based dishes, we had a very well rounded meal. It’s easy for those with dietary restrictions to enjoy Banjara as the menu is clearly labeled. Vegetarians and wheat sensitive diners will have no problem finding many dishes to suit their needs.
The waiters were attentive and happy to uncork the wine we brought with us with no corking fee!
The portions were hearty, but not overwhelming. The rice may be the only disappointment of the meal as it was rather bland. That’s hardly a noticeable flaw when standing next to fragrant and complex curries! The waiters were helpful in explaining spice levels and picking various accompaniments for the meal.
If you’ve forgotten to grab a bottle of wine before meeting friends, worry not! There is a newly remodeled Wine & Spirits right next door with a great refrigerated section. Diners will also be happy to know there is parking available in the adjacent lot.
