The Twisted Tail, the popular Southern-inspired restaurant, bar and live music venue on Headhouse Square, recently welcomed Executive Chef Leo Forneas back to head up its culinary operations— this time with an expanded contemporary American focus and an emphasis on shared plates and sophisticated flavor profiles contributing to a dynamic social mix.
Longtime fans of the restaurant will still enjoy Senat Farm Fried Chicken, Shrimp & Grits with bacon and scallions and BBQ Smoked Ribs with celeriac slaw, but what Forneas’ new menu brings to the table is arguably The Twisted Tail’s most accomplished menu to date.
The popular Charcoal Grill offers Octopus, Quail, Spring Lamb Chops, and Wild Boar Sausage, among the mix.
The new small plates section includes Duck Confit, Big Eye Tuna, Chicken Liver Mousse toast with Harry’s Berries Strawberry gelee.
Entrees change seasonally with recent additions such as Soft Shell Crabs and Grilled Sea Bass. Shared sides tempt guests with the popular Crawfish Mac & Cheese, Brussels Sprouts with bacon vinaigrette and corn bread.

“Leo comes in with a full understanding of who we are from day one,” says The Twisted Tail owner George Reilly. “The key change we made was to create synergy with the food menu and add to the social dynamic of our guests’ experience. That dynamic has always been present at the bar and with the music, but now it’s reflected in our menus as well. People can share and pass, talk about meals and get an eclectic tasting of what the menu offers.”
Reilly, a former actor and longtime barman, heads up the bar program at The Twisted Tail with seasonal offerings such as his take on The Geisha, featuring rye whiskey, yuzu juice and smoked vanilla.
The Twisted Tail boasts one of the city’s best selections of bourbons and whiskeys in addition to a well considered and extensive craft beer selection.
The Twisted Tail is located at 509 South 2nd Street (between Lombard & Naudain Sts) off South Street.
