SECOND UPDATE: While official annoucements *still* have not been made, sources say in this Inquirer article, that the building will be razed, a new building will take its place, which will include a new diner. Oh boy. Stay tuned for more as this story develops!
UPDATE: FALSE ALARM! Someone who works there says the diner is not going anywhere and the diner will remain for a long time to come. PHEW!!! (This is confusing, though.)

Either way, sounds like a good idea to get over there and have a meal to show your appreciation.
I just read over on Twitter that there is a permit for the historic and legendary Melrose Diner in South Philadelphia to be demolished? This cannot be true!! From what I can tell, there has been no official annoucements, but the permit looks pretty darn official. I don’t want to alarm anybody but this is sad news if indeed true. This is a Philadelphia institution.
I’m investigating. Stay tuned! (See above – it appears SAFE for now!)

It’s pretty obvious that the employees, including shift managers, have not yet been told of the owner’s plans. The drawing in the permit is perfectly clear with both buildings labeled “TO BE DEMOLISHED” and also showing an 8′ high chain link fence to be erected around the entire property.
