Executive Chef Roth Perelman and Philadelphia’s premier event planning company, Catering By Design (CBD), launch a new venture in Mt. Airy, a Mexican and Asian fusion restaurant called DOHO Taqueria, on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, at 4pm.
At this time, it is delivery and take-out only, with a brick and mortar store to follow. The restaurant’s brand design, created through collaboration with high school students from Mural Arts’ Artrepreneur program, will also be unveiled.
The pandemic provided the impetus for this new project. As CBD’s calendar cleared of hundreds of events, Chef Perelman decided to focus on a long-held dream. “I’ve wanted to open a taqueria for about 10 years now, and if it wasn’t for the pandemic, I wouldn’t have been able to do it.” Working with the chefs in the kitchen, recipes were perfected, including their reimagining of the taco made with bao bun dough.
While the chefs were concocting these new dishes, CBD has been, since April, committed to being part of the groundbreaking philanthropic program Step Up To The Plate which has provided over 450,000 meals to people experiencing homelessness and food insecurity due to the COVID-19 crisis. Mural Arts also participated by creating beautiful decals instructing social distancing. Each “space pad” as they are called, was designed by a Mural Arts artist. With plans for DOHO being finalized, Peter Loevy, President of CBD, reached out to the Director of Mural Arts, Jane Golden, to see if the program would be interested in the DOHO branding project. Jane thought it perfect for their high school students’ Entrepreneurial Program. After a great few weeks of collaboration, the results are ready to be unveiled!
“While 2020 wasn’t easy in any way,” said Loevy, we are thankful for the new relationships and exploring a new frontier. Our work with Step Up and Mural arts is going to continue this winter, and we are looking forward to seeing how DOHO evolves. I said I would never own a restaurant, but I’ve never lived through a pandemic either that canceled over 700 events! DOHO’s food is unique, delicious, and has received many accolades since our 45-day soft opening.”
DOHO is located in West Mt. Airy at 18 West Hortter Street, Philadelphia, PA 19119. The official opening and unveiling will be at 4pm on Tuesday, January 12, 2021.
