Three hundred years ago Pennsylvania’s Brandywine Valley was known as the “breadbasket of the colonies”. The region provided quality goods, fresh food, and delicious whiskey to the surrounding areas, all powered by innumerable mills.
New Liberty Distillery is releasing its Millstone Sour Mash Straight Rye on Thursday, November 12, 2020, as a celebration of that local legacy made with raw and malted rye from local provider Deer Creek Malthouse and aged for two years in new American oak.
This edition utilizes the traditional sour mash technique, with another local twist: a sourdough starter from local breadbasket High Street Philly was added to the fermentation to impact a local flora & ester character to this delicious bath of straight rye whiskey.

The folks at New Liberty Distillery were kind to send me a bottle of the limited Millstone Sour Mash Straight Rye Whiskey and an actual sourdough loaf from High Street Philly.

The 47.5% ABV (95 proof) whiskey exudes notes of Black Tea and Orange Blossom on the nose, followed by a rounded flavor palette of creamy vanilla fudge, leather, spice, and candied citrus peel. A perfect warming spirit for the colder weather months to come!
I love seeing these collaborations among local purveyors. This one really does come full circle with the sourdough starter yeast and Deer Creek Malthouse grain that is used in High Street’s sourdough loaf used in this new local legacy inspired whiskey.
The 750ML bottle retails for $49.99 and is available for purchase on New Liberty’s online shop.
