Merchant Spotlight: The Custard Cart

I had a lot of free time this past Saturday, thanks to the long Memorial Day weekend. This is a rarity as weekends are usually reserved for house chores, errands, and other stuff I don’t get around to during the week after working 50+ hours at the old day job.

I promised myself that I would make time to attend as many local farmers markets as possible this season because I am determined to eat healthier. Seeking out fresh from the farm fruits and vegetables is an absolute must. Luckily, there is an abundance of community farmers markets in South Jersey.

I decided to visit the Haddonfield Farmers Market this past weekend. Open every Saturday from 8:30 to 1:00 in King’s Court, it’s a bit cozy but you’re able to move around pretty well. There is a nice assortment of vendors and purveyors offering high-quality and seasonal produce, fresh foods, baked goods, and wellness products. With live entertainment, it offers a festive atmosphere that is family-friendly and great for socializing with the community.

As far as food vendors go, I was most eager to visit The Custard Cart. I have been following on social media for quite a while, salivating over the handcrafted custard treats and pastries such as mini tarts, creme puffs, doughnuts, and canneles as well as custard-based ice cream goodies.

Chef Walter of The Custard Cart

The cart, a temperature controlled “food tricycle”, is owned and operated by Walter Gouldsbury, who is quite the Renaissance man. Not only is Walter a professional trained chef (with a diploma from the Institute of Culinary Education in NYC), he also happens to be a practicing attorney by day.

Wanting to explore his passion for food, in this case, mouthwatering gourmet custard-based desserts, he launched The Custard Cart in 2018 and has been primarily stationed at The Haddonfield Farmers Market. He also offers private catering and the cart can be rented off-site for events, too.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Strawberry Shortcake Tartlet, which was a perfect two-bite treat. The tart shell was perfectly golden brown and buttery; the custard was ultra-smooth, rich and creamy; and the strawberry preserves on top added a lovely tangy-sweet punch of flavor. This delectable pastry easily melted in my mouth.

Protip: Go early! He’s prone to selling out due to offering small batches. For instance, I really wanted to try a cannele, but it was sold out by 10AM. 😮

Walter is committed to bringing good food to Haddonfield. Along with Marcello De Feo of Valente’s Italian Specialties, he will be preparing food for the first Friends of Haddonfield Farmers Market Dinner on Saturday, June 8th from 6-9 PM.

He has also partnered with Marcello on a new artisanal burger concept called Founder & Signer that will open in Haddonfield sometime this year.

Keep your eyes on Walter (and Haddonfield) for tasty things to come!
