Affogatos in Ardmore: Lu & Aug’s Opening in Late April

Lu & Aug’s, a brand new ice cream parlor specializing in premium soft serve ice cream, coffee and affogatos, and baked goods will open at 28 Rittenhouse Place in Ardmore in late April. The shop is the brainchild of husband-and-wife entrepreneurs Ash & Pretha Kailath of Delaware County, along with their two teenage children.

“We decided to go all in on creating an experience focused on something we love: delicious ice cream and hand-crafted coffee drinks, all with a focus of being able to disconnect from the daily grind,” said Pretha. “The combination of classic, premium soft serve ice cream and exceptional coffee is versatile, and there are few options for both in Philly or the suburbs. We named the brand Lu & Aug’s as a nod to our kids, Laiyla, 15, and Augustine, 14, who have been right by our side from day one of this exciting new venture,” she added.

Lu & Aug’s menu includes soft serve ice cream with vegan options, pup cups, espresso, coffee-based drinks, brownies, and Philly favorites Famous 4th Street Cookies and Dottie’s Donuts. The coffee comes from OX coffee in Queen Village — a high-quality brand that is harvested, processed and roasted using sustainable and organic practices, which the Kailaths selected for its bold flavor and environmentally responsible business practices.

Lu & Aug’s will also introduce affogatos, which means “drowned” in Italian — a luscious, coffee-based indulgence that’s served throughout Italy which is typically made with a scoop of ice cream topped with a shot of freshly brewed hot espresso. The shop will offer about half a dozen affogato options, including Dirty Chai, Salted Caramel and Peppermint Mocha, as well as a variety of specialty flavors and seasonal options.

“Our dessert bar focuses on creating premium soft serve ice cream options that are uniquely delightful, while also offering more typical ice cream parlor flavor experiences,” said Ash. “We offer a simple menu but also include room for variety. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you’ll definitely want to try our handcrafted specials like Lancaster Cinnamon Stroopies, Matcha Madness, Sunrise in California, and Gingerbread Boi. Coffee lovers and ice cream aficionados alike will find something to love at our shop.”

The 1,200 square-foot business will have indoor seating for 22 and will be open Mondays through Saturdays. The Kailaths hope to open more locations in the future.
