A 21st-century Philadelphia tradition continues this spring with the Fifth Annual edition of the Best Vegan Cheesesteak in Philly Contest, when purveyors of the meatless, dairy-free sandwiches will vie to claim the title, and 2017 champion Blackbird Pizzeria will do its best to retain it.
The fun begins on Vegan Cheesesteak Day, March 20, which is also the day of the Great American Meatout, as participating vendors will offer special Vegan Cheesesteak promotions in the form of discounts and add-ons to entice Philly eaters to acquaint themselves with their product. All of Vegan Cheesesteak Week, Philadelphians are encouraged to continue sampling vegan cheesesteaks in order to make the most informed vote possible. Then on March 26, voting opens across the field of several dozen outlets serving up animal-free versions of Philly’s signature sandwich, and people can put their votes where their mouths were.
With the conclusion of voting on April 5, the top 3 vendors will be named as finalists. These businesses and others will be invited to be among the favored five sampling their vegan cheesesteaks for the public at the Final Judging Event, which will take place at the Philadelphia Ethical Society on Sunday, April 8 at 6:00 p.m. In a ceremony emceed by Pat’s Steaks owner Frank Olivieri, Jr., our panel of esteemed vegan cheesesteak judges will taste each of the finalists and vote to determine the ultimate 2018 champion – who gets the right to call their sandwich the Best Vegan Cheesesteak in Philly!
