LeBon James mural at Javelin Philadelphia

Javelin in Fairmount, which recently went viral for having the first Lebron James mural painted in Philadelphia since signing with the Philadelphia 76ers, is hosting an end-of-the-summer, one-night-only Maguro Kaitai experience with Chef Carlos Wills of Ogawa Sushi & Kappo.

The evening will also feature Cambodian-style appetizers and cocktails by Mixologist Richie Tray. The Maguro Kaitai show, also known as a tuna cutting ceremony, will begin at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18th at Javelin, located at 1811 Fairmount Avenue.

Guests will be greeted with South Asian inspired cocktails featuring Philadelphia Craft Ice Co. ice. Richie Trayโ€™s curated beverage menu features a banana boulevardier; a pandan sour; and a Southeast margarita with herb-infused lime juice and green mango agave.

The event will begin promptly at 6 p.m., where Wills will educate the audience about the Maguro Kaitai tradition, followed by the dissection of a 250-300 pound bluefin tuna.

Guests will be served papaya salad, karaage chicken, and Cambodian-style crudo, plus several courses of premium tuna cuts, including sashimi; bone marrow; spicy toro handrolls topped with uni; and a few more surprises imported directly from Japan. Courses will also feature caviar from the locally beloved Caviar XS.

โ€œA Maguro Kaitai show with Chef Carlos Wills is something that weโ€™ve been hoping to schedule for a while,โ€ said Javelinโ€™s Albert Zheng, who is also a partner in Ogawa Sushi & Kappo. โ€œItโ€™s only natural for us to do this with Carlos. Heโ€™s amazing and super experienced. Iโ€™m also excited to see Richie tap into his Cambodian roots. Itโ€™s going to be really cool to have everything come together.โ€

Reservations are $170 per person plus tax and gratuity, and can be booked here. Walk-ins or regular delivery service will not be available during this event.
