Elisabeth Beraquit, 29, originally from Brigantine, NJ, was on track to be a tax accountant for the rest of her life. She acquired a business degree in 2014 and became a CPA in 2016.
Baking has always been her true passion, though. The hobby kept her sane while quarantining in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when she baked up a storm, even during the busy tax season.
“Baking is a form of therapy for me,” Beraquit explained. “perfecting the combination of ingredients and seeing the reactions of people tasting the results contributed greatly to my happiness.”
She would send off baked goods care packages to loved ones, and they would meet via Zoom meetings to share virtually.
“This simple act of baking and sending the sweet treats to family helped keep me connected to them and get us all through those very rough early days,” recalled Beraquit.
During these baking marathons for family, she began thinking it was time for a career change. The crazy idea to open a bakeshop would not go away, and she knew it was now or never. She got to work on it right away, including choosing a name, legally starting the business, and looking for a storefront.
“In November of 2020, I finally found a place in Fishtown, where I could envision my dream turning into a reality,” Beraquit exclaimed. “My last tax season was in the books in May 2021, and my focus shifted from 1040s and balance sheets to macarons and honey pies!”
After months of research and planning, Beehive Bakeshop was born.
Today the Fishtown bakeshop celebrates its grand opening at 1764 Frankford Ave, offering a variety of cookies, macarons, pies, donuts, and muffins along with La Colombe Coffee.
Operating hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7 AM to 4 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 8 AM to 5 PM. The bakeshop is closed on Tuesdays.
