Three months ago, Bar Poulet opened in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood, offering a menu with an interesting combination of fried chicken and champagne. Philadelphia food lovers may have scratched their heads, but it’s a pairing that has been trending upwards in other cities such as New York, Raleigh, and Houston.
The food and beverage match-up of crispy fried chicken and sparkling champagne is a reasonably common pairing in Southern states. It’s all about cleansing the palate. The effervescence of the champagne cuts through the greasiness of the fried chicken. The bubbly provides acidity and fruitiness, balancing the crunchy chicken’s fatty and salty flavor profile. So why not?
Bar Poulet is not the only one getting into the fried chicken and sparkling wine game. Square 1682, also in Rittenhouse Square, is offering a weekend-only bucket of fried chicken and biscuits along with a bottle of Prosecco, for two, for $44.
