Kevin Yanaga “The Sushi Whisperer” to open Kappo Cuisine experience at the former Abbaye in Northern Liberties

Announced on Instagram, Kevin Yanaga, also known as “The Sushi Whisperer,” will open his own izakaya featuring Kappo-style cuisine.

Kappo is a Japanese-style cuisine that falls between the more refined ‘kaiseki’ style and the casual izakaya. It is a multi-course meal left entirely up to the chef.

Kevin had most recently worked at Stephen Starr’s revamped POD concept in University City. Before that, he helmed the short-lived Omakase by Yanaga in Fishtown.

According to this post on Culinary Agents, the “Kappo-Izakaya” portion of the restaurant will feature a full-service dining and bar area serving takes of Japanese comfort food. Taking over the previous restaurant space “The Abbaye” – their style will lean towards the concept of a Japanese dive bar.

It sounds like they are shooting to open in April. Other details will be forthcoming, but this is good news for fans of Japanese dining in Philadelphia.

Yanaga Kappo Izakaya will be located at 637 N 3rd Street.
