Toll Man Joe’s Return to Philly at Former Mixto Location in Washington Square West

Toll Man Joe’s has officially announced that it will reopen in Philadelphia, taking over the recently closed Mixto restaurant at the corner of 12th and Pine Streets in Washington Square West. The announcement marks the beginning of a new chapter for a restaurant that built a loyal following before closing during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

For years, fans have wondered if Toll Man Joe’s would ever return to the city after its popular Oregon Avenue location closed in 2020. They never gave up the dream of coming back to the city. The search for the perfect location was a long one. Still, they believe they’ve finally found it in the former home of Mixto, a restaurant that itself became a neighborhood institution over the past two decades.

The new Toll Man Joe’s aims to become once again a gathering place for the community. In this comfortable neighborhood restaurant, guests can enjoy great food, creative drinks, live sports, special events, and occasional live music. The spacious location will also accommodate private events and celebrations, adding another dimension to the restaurant’s offerings.

The new concept will operate as a full-service restaurant and bar featuring Toll Man Joe’s famous award-winning wings alongside elevated breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus. Guests can expect Philadelphia comfort food favorites paired with globally inspired flavors, while the bar program will showcase handcrafted cocktails, local craft beers, and a thoughtfully curated wine selection.

Leading the restaurant’s return is one of the founders and owners, Lori Penrose, joined by Executive Chef Arturo Bermudez Luna, who has been part of Toll Man Joe’s since its earliest days. Also helping guide the restaurant into its next chapter is General Manager and Director of Brand & Operations Shannon Penrose.

In announcing the news, the team expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped make the return possible, including the original South Philadelphia staff, the team behind the successful BYOB pop-up in Woolwich, New Jersey, and the loyal customers who continued supporting them over the years.

The Woolwich BYOB location has allowed Toll Man Joe’s to maintain a presence while searching for a permanent Philadelphia home, and the owners confirmed that South Jersey diners have nothing to worry about—the Woolwich location will continue operating as usual.

While an official opening date has not yet been announced, Toll Man Joe’s expects to welcome guests within the next few weeks, perfectly timed for the start of football season.

Philadelphia’s restaurant scene has seen its share of changes over the past few years, but this is one comeback that many diners have been eagerly waiting for.
