A new chapter in Philadelphia’s ever-evolving dining scene is taking shape in Chinatown, as Vegans Are Us prepares to open inside The Square Food Hall, the city’s first Black-owned food hall, which opened in January in Chinatown.
Located at The Square Food Hall (1018 Race Street), the highly anticipated concept brings a bold, plant-based twist to classic comforting food. Known for its previous locations in Vineland and Atlantic City, Vegans Are Us has built a loyal following for its plant-based approach to soul food, and now it’s bringing that energy to Center City, Philadelphia.
The menu is expected to feature indulgent, crowd-pleasing staples like creamy vegan mac and cheese, hearty plant-based cheesesteaks, and smoky BBQ jackfruit, all crafted without animal products but packed with familiar, comforting flavors. The casual concept aims to appeal not only to vegans but also to curious food lovers looking to explore plant-based takes on beloved dishes.
Vegans Are Us joins a dynamic lineup of vendors already operating within The Square, including Carter’s Steaks, The Yummy Palace, Prettty Eatz, and The Vault Seafood Fusion. Together, the collective offers a diverse mix of flavors and culinary styles, contributing to the food hall’s growing reputation.
The Square Food Hall is helmed by Levell “Garci” Peterkin, a North Philadelphia native and the owner of Carter’s Steaks. Formerly known as Chinatown Square, the venue originally opened in 2017 but sat vacant for the last two years. Now, Peterkin is reimagining the space with a mission to support Black-owned businesses and infuse it with vibrant culture. He’s coined it a black-owned “mini-Reading Terminal Market.”
With hours running Sunday through Thursday from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m., and extended hours until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, The Square is surely a go-to hub for both daytime bites and nighttime dining in Chinatown.
The arrival of Vegans Are Us not only expands the city’s plant-based offerings but also reinforces The Square’s mission to spotlight diverse, minority-owned food concepts. Stay tuned for an opening date.
