Kanpai! Sake, the revered iconic Japanese adult beverage, makes its debut at SOMO restaurant, located at 4311 Main Street in Manayunk, in a new and imaginative way. The new “Sake-Tails” program combines the fragrant and complex nuances of the delicate rice-based nectar with delicious and inventive cocktail creations.

“I don’t know of any other restaurant in the Philadelphia region that’s offering a cocktail program so heavily dedicated to sake cocktails,” said designer-turned-restaurateur James Morrissey. “These drinks are distinctive, delicious and pair beautifully with every dish on our menu, and I hope Philadelphia’s discerning cocktail lovers enjoy them as much as I do.”

SOMO’s Sake-Tails program includes eight whimsically named creations, each priced at $10:

Sake is a gluten-free product brewed with the most simple of ingredients: water, rice, a mold and yeast. Many mistakenly think of sake as rice wine, but the liquid libation made from fermented rice is more similar to beer than wine in its production process.

“The Japanese have a saying about sake: Nihonshu wa ryori wo erabanai,” explained Morrissey. “This means ‘sake doesn’t fight with food.’  Diners will find SOMO’s Sake-Tails are a perfect complement to the restaurant’s menu options,” he said.

SOMO is a New American bistro offering small plates, sandwiches and elevated entrees in industrial-chic digs at 4311 Main Street in Manayunk.
