Founded by Anjali Gupta, Pinwheel Provisions is an innovative new food retail concept inspired by meal trends she has observed taking hold in Europe for over a decade. On overseas trips, Anjali noticed the popularity of frozen meals and individual frozen items for quick, healthy home meals, particularly in France, the UK, and Scandinavia. Impressed by the many frozen food markets she visited overseas, and the ways in which frozen products made it easy to put tasty and nutritious meals on the table with minimal prep time and minimal food or packaging waste, she set out to bring the approach to America.

Pinwheel Provisions: How it Works

Developed in suburban Philadelphia, with production facilities in Sharon Hill, Pinwheel Provisions created three meal components designed for customers to customize and grab and go quickly. The meal components include: Fresh Frozens, Ready Dishes, and Mealmakers.

Fresh Frozens— individually flash frozen, prepped, ready-to-use products including harvest-quality fruits and vegetables, proteins, and more, many sourced from local farms. Customers are able to purchase as little or as much of each ingredient as they need, and in any combination, using the reusable freezer bags or their own containers, minimizing wasteful packaging and eliminating the prospect of food spoilage.

Ready Dishes — chef-created, fully-prepared “heat and eat” dishes that can be combined with other Pinwheel products to form complete meals in a pinch.  The Ready Dishes feature a variety of cuisines and provide options suitable for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets.

Mealmakers — versatile artisan-produced marinades, sauces, spice rubs, pastas, grains,  rice and other pantry staples, produced by small-batch makers from around the globe, that will help customers round out their frozen products into complete meals quickly and easily.

Last September, Pinwheel Provisions debuted the new food retail concept at the Market at Liberty Place in Kennett Square, PA. The popup ran through November and quickly generated buzz in the community. People of all ages, palates, and dietary restrictions were delighted by the concept and became fast fans of being able to pick and choose prepped and ready products based on their needs and preferences.

The popup featured self-serve freezers loaded with Fresh Frozens and Ready Dishes as well as shelves containing the Mealmakers products. Live cooking demonstrations showed how the products could be used to create quick meals. Visitors were also encouraged to try product samples before purchasing.

Customers helped themselves by scooping items from the Fresh Frozen self-serving freezer into reusable freezer bags or their own bags and containers, or selecting from the pre-packaged Ready Meals and the “Mealmakers” products. Customers were impressed by the easy and convenient process of selecting just the foods and quantities they need taking the stress out of meal planning and meal prepping.

Pinwheel developed a loyal and regular following in its run at Kennett Square. The success of the inaugural popup confirmed for Anjali and the team at Pinwheel Provisions that there is a need for this type of retail food shopping experience. They chose Narberth as a next location because they believed it to be an ideal community in which to introduce their concept. They’re confident busy families, young professionals, and empty-nesters in the Mainline Philadelphia area and beyond will be captivated by this innovative and flexible meal making concept.

Pinwheel Provisions popup site will be located at 121 N. Narberth Ave., adjacent to the Narberth Theater. Their initial hours of operation will be Fridays 9:30-4:00 and Saturdays 9:30-4:00, with plans to expand operating hours in March.
