The Indian Grill, a new BYOB restaurant located in Old City, has brought the tastes and ambiance of Indian culture to Philadelphia. Inspired by the royal courts in India, The Indian Grill specializes in North Indian cuisine with options of Indo-Chinese food. The restaurant recently opened for daily lunch and dinner at 114 Chestnut Street.

The Indian Grill offers time-honored Indian dishes while using a modern and distinctive approach to both the preparation of dishes and their ingredients. With a combined experience of more than 60 years, Mangal Singh Nagra and Baldev Virdi are the dedicated owners and executive chefs behind the menu. Drawing from customs passed down through generations, Nagra and Virdi incorporate unique and subtle flavors into each dish, enhancing every dining experience. Constantly creating new items, the innovative chefs can modify and customize any dish, aiming to satisfy the palate of every customer. The passion for and commitment to authenticity to Indian culture is evident in each appetizer, lunch, dinner, homemade bread, and dessert item served.

The Indian Grill joins already great restaurants like Buk Chon Korean BBQ and Glory Beer Bar & Kitchen on Chestnut Street between Front and 2nd. The Indian Grill is a vibrant new addition to the neighborhood and will serve as the perfect destination for a multitude of Indian cuisine desires. I was lucky enough to attend a media night for the newest addition to an ever improving restaurant scene in Old City Philadelphia.

It is a huge location with plenty of seating and beautiful decor. I was first impressed by how stunning the restaurant looked. There’s a contemporary look to the place. It made me very excited to eat there. I was late to being introduced to Indian cuisine. My first experience trying Indian cuisine was at the buffet at New Delhi in University City a few years ago and I have been a huge fan ever since. I have eaten at a lot of Indian restaurants since so I was happy to add The Indian Grill to my Indian restaurant list!

I always look to see how good the samosas and naan are at an Indian restaurant, so as I deeply analyzed the buffet from The Indian Grill they were the first two items I put on my plate. I noticed was that the garlic naan had plenty of garlic and sure enough it was filled with delicious garlic flavor. The vegetarian samosas were packed with filling and incredibly scrumptious.

Next, as I put a little bit of everything they had on my plate and “sampled” each offering, what stood out from the rest for me was their fantastic Chicken Tikka Masala. This very well could be the best I’ve ever had; the chicken literally melted in your mouth which shows that they are masters of the tandoor and the rich tomato, onion, and cream sauce was super yummy. If Chicken Tikka Masala is your favorite Indian cuisine dish you must get here right away!

The menu is hearty, authentic, yet varied. I absolutely loved the fact that they also offer some tasty American food, which is pretty unusual for a restaurant specializing in Indian Cuisine. It includes such items such as stuffed chicken breast and even chicken fingers for the kids.

The lunch and dinner menu is impressive and large. But my picks are the Garlic Naan which is so fresh and packed with delicious garlic flavor and the Chicken Tikka Masala. For vegetarian lovers, the vegetarian samosas are second to none, you cannot go wrong with them. All of this makes the Indian Grill the absolute perfect spot for vegetarians and carnivores alike.

The Indian Grill is a great pick for those who are picky eaters and simply might not be into Indian Cuisine. If you work in or visit Center City and have a crowd of people with different tastes in food, then this is the perfect place for you to go.

  1. Authentic? Chicken Tikka Masala is the chop suey of Indian food, called by many the national dish of England. You should come over to New Jersey sometime and try Palace of Asia, though it may be too exotic for your tastes. For truly first-rate modern Indian food, Inde Blue on 13th near Locust is as good as it gets in the Delaware Valley.
