Legendary restaurant Chubby’s 1 ½ Hearth has been reborn as Chubby’s 1 ½ Steakhouse located at 239 Monmouth Street in historic Gloucester City, New Jersey. It is a premier dining destination in South Jersey taking its rightful place as one of the finest steakhouses in the Philadelphia region. You can expect a top-shelf experience with the grandiose charm of a New York City steakhouse, but not with NYC prices.
Paying homage to the streamlined and luxurious Art Deco style prevalent during the Prohibition era, the authentic bar area at Chubby’s exudes the classic glamour of the jazz age. It is the perfect spot to meet up with friends, impress business associates, or just unwind after work with your favorite libation, a glass of fine wine, or a variety of domestic, import, or craft beers on draft.
Chubby’s Steakhouse occupies a century-old building with loads of vintage character. Formerly a pharmacy and doctor’s office, the interior was transformed into an elegant and inviting dining room. Chubby’s offers the finest steakhouse fare with all the high-end accoutrements that you would expect at a restaurant of this caliber. Sophisticated, not stuffy. A classy eating place where you will enjoy a delectable meal for a great value.
Upon a recent visit, we were treated to Chubby’s warm hospitality and top-shelf experience. We walked away uber fans and felt it is worthy of 5-star status.
A cocktail is always the first thing on my mind at any restaurant and certainly in particular at Chubby’s. It would have been a crime not to order one from such an extraordinary bar! I chose the classic French Martini made with Tito’s Homemade Vodka, Chambord, and pineapple juice. This exceptional cocktail did not disappoint and as you see from the photo, I received half of an extra pour just because, as legend has it, that is where the 1 ½ comes from. The more, the merrier I say!
Baked Clams are not something we order from a menu as an appetizer too often. We like them just fine; we usually see something else that tickles our fancy, but these came highly recommended so we pulled the trigger on them. So happy we did because they were as exquisite a representation of baked clams as we’ve ever had. Littleneck clams shucked to order stuffed with toasted bread crumbs, peppers, onions, and topped with thick pieces of Nueske’s bacon for $12. Oh yes!
When the hubster sees a classic Wedge Salad on a menu, he goes for it. He remarked that Chubby’s nailed it. I’m pretty much not a fan of bleu cheese, but I overlooked that and really loved this ultra fresh and pungent salad. Loved the addition of Kirby cucumbers on the plate as well. It’s a large salad and can easily feed two at $9.
The steaks are the star of the menu and Chubby’s execution shines. Sourced from Wells Meats in Philadelphia, these exceptional cuts make for the most melt-in-your-mouth delicious bite. Hubby’s Dry-Aged USDA Prime New York Strip Steak ($34) was 16 oz. of premium, medium-rare yumminess fit for a King! Each steak comes with a side of creamy mashed potatoes and presented beautifully on the plate with delicate microgreens and a swish of balsamic glaze for garnish.
My 10 oz. portion of medium-rare Filet Mignon ($32) was mouthwateringly magnificent. Made even more decadent with the addition of a rich, luxurious Mushroom Demi-Glace ($3). It just doesn’t get any better than that, my friends.
Folks, there are definitely lots of fabulous steakhouses and fine dining restaurants in the Philadelphia region. I think we’ve found the holy grail, though. Steak nirvana, if you will. I don’t think you will find a better casual fine dining steakhouse experience in South Jersey at the very least. Treat yourself, as they say. Check out Chubby’s 1 ½ Steakhouse at 239 Monmouth Street in Gloucester City for an exceptional dining experience and come back here and tell me what you think. I’ll wait.
Be sure to tell them Philly Grub sent ya!
Special thanks to Chubby’s for the hospitality. Our opinions are our own.
