What’s New in South Jersey: Ten Asian Food Hall, Roots Cafe, Denim American Bistro Brunch & more

The South Jersey restaurant scene is heating up again. I’m quite excited because it means more options for me. I’ve been living in South Jersey for 6 years and it always excites me when a new restaurant opens over here.

Ten Asian Food Hall – Cherry Hill

Poke bowls are on the fast track to becoming this year’s hottest food item. Poke bowls in Philadelphia are pretty easy to find, but on this side of the bridge, it was tough. But it’s now catching on, especially in the Cherry Hill area. Sushi-To-Go, Go Stir Fry, and Little Tokyo in the Cherry Hill Mall had already added poke bowls to their menu. Now comes Ten Asian Food Hall at 706 Haddonfield Road (same strip as MOD Pizza and Habit Burger) offering poke bowls, including build-your-own poke bowls, Korean fried chicken, and bubble teas. I went on opening night just this past Friday and enjoyed a poke bowl with Ahi tuna, salmon, sushi rice, edamame, cucumber, corn, seaweed salad, pineapple, avocado, eel sauce, puffed rice, and masago (fish egg). I also ordered a Jasmine Milk Green Bubble Tea. I can’t wait to go back to try their Korean fried chicken. They have many options including fried whole chicken, chicken wings, boneless wings, sandwiches and American-friendly sides like regular fries, sweet potato fries, and coleslaw. There’s also sushi burritos and other Korean offerings or “K-Foods” as they call it. I’m excited to try it all!

Roots Cafe – Maple Shade

Roots Cafe is now open at 28 South Church Road in Maple Shade. It took over the space that Forno Pizza & Grille vacated. This new breakfast, lunch, and brunch spot is following the same model as the Turning Point Restaurants in that they are not open for dinner. Breakfast and lunch during the week and brunch on the weekends. Hours are 6:30 AM-2:00 PM daily. Breakfast/brunch items include skillets, Benedicts, pancakes, french toasts, breakfast sandwiches, shrimp & grits, loco moco, chicken & waffles, a breakfast enchilada, breakfast pizzas, and various kid-friendly nibbles. Lunch items include a variety of sandwiches, salads, pizzas, and burgers. They also offer “lighter fare” such as oatmeal, egg white omelets, and cauliflower tacos to name a few. Coffee-drinks and “tonics” or fresh fruit juices round out the menu. I went yesterday and enjoyed the Smoked Salmon Benedict and hubby got The SBH skillet. We look forward to going back to try more of the menu.

Denim American Bistro Debuts Brunch – Cherry Hill

Denim American Bistro located at 312 Kresson Road which grand opened to the public last Wednesday, is now offering their Sunday brunch buffet. This is exactly what we need more of in South Jersey. There just aren’t enough brunch options as far as I’m concerned! It will feature a variety of brunch and lunch items such as french toast, pancakes, eggs, home fries, fresh fruit, and so much more. Stay tuned for a review coming soon!

Fitzwilly’s Ice Cream – Cherry Hill

Fitzwilly’s is a new ice cream parlor that opened a couple of months ago at 1512 Route 38 East.  This sweet novelty shop with a cute Circus/Carnival motif carries a variety of ice cream flavors available by the cup or cone. You can make your own ice cream dessert from sundaes to cookie sandwiches to Belgian Waffles and much more. They also serve hot foods like breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs, a burger, sausage, and meatball subs. Coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are also available. There’s also some baked goods like cupcakes, cookies, and cinnamon rolls. It’s adorable!

Bubbakoo’s Burritos – Cherry Hill

Zac’s Pancake House did not last long at 56 Haddonfield Road. Food was decent, but service was awkward. Taking its place will be Bubbakoo’s Burritos which is a regional chain based in Ocean County, NJ. The first restaurant opened in Point Pleasant and they’ve been opening new ones all over Ocean and Monmouth counties. There’s also one in Atlantic City. The fast-casual concept features build-your-own burritos, burrito bowls, tacos, taco salads, quesadillas, and nachos. So, in essence, a lot like Chipotle. The list of meats is pretty impressive and go beyond the usual suspects. Hibachi steak, seared shrimp, fried chicken, and vegan Boca patties are some of the more exciting proteins you can add to your dish. You can also add a variety of flavors in the form of hot sauces to your food like Mango Habanero, Sweet Chili, and General Tso’s. I predict a lot of fusion experimentation in my future. I’ve reached out for comment but waiting to hear when they expect to open. My guess is by the holiday season or end of the year.

I got the scoop! Okay, I just drove by and have Eagle eyes for this stuff even at night. LOL! @zacspancakehouse on Haddonfield Road (across from @MallChevy) is closed and taking its place is @bubbakoosburritos. It will be the first (franchised?) location on this side of the state as they have several locations in Ocean and Monmouth County. Also one in Atlantic City. Really looking forward to this burrito/burrito bowl, taco, nacho, quesadilla, and salad concept. The sheer amount of proteins they offer is awesome! Plus lots of flavor options. Going to LOVE this place and it's right behind my house basically. 🤤 #bubbakoos #bubbakooburritos #cherryhillrestaurant #cherryhillmall
